EMPOWER

History has often overlooked women. They have often been omitted from the historical records, with their contributions being unrecognized, underappreciated or even erased (a phenomenon described as Matilda Effect). Current historical research aims to shine a light on women's stories and give them the recognition they deserve (see, for example, Women in the History of Quantum Physics by Charbonneau, Frank, van der Heijden and Monaldi 2025).

On the one hand, atom*innen aims to highlight the remarkable women of the past who have often been sidelined in the history of physics. On the other hand, we strive to showcase contemporary female achievers in the field to counter the stereotype that success in science requires sacrificing one's personal life.

In the EMPOWER section, you will discover the stories of pioneering women in physics who are challenging stereotypes and redefining success. You will also find women who are making a difference in physics today. Don't hesitate to invite them to your next conference, lecture or workshop! This way we hope to counter the still common argument;that suitable female speakers in the field are difficult to find.
