On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Presidium and the Women’s Committee of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) hosts a special event dedicated to the research achievements of its female members. Held as part of the Academy’s public plenary session, the hybrid event highlights the role of diversity and inclusion in advancing scientific excellence.
Historian and Africanist Anaïs Angelo, member of the Young Academy of the ÖAW, explores the evolving significance of International Women’s Day in her talk,
“The Changing Meanings of International Women’s Day: From Collective Solidarity to Individual Empowerment.”
She examined how the day’s political and social dimensions have shifted over time.
Quantum physicist Francesca Ferlaino, founder of atom*innen and Austria’s Scientist of the Year 2025, addresses “Europe’s Quantum Future: Science, Talent and the Power of Inclusion.” She discusses how diverse research teams contribute to creativity, resilience, and long-term innovation, particularly in rapidly developing fields such as quantum science.
